About Tile Calculator

The Tile Calculator Tool helps you estimate the total number of tiles required to cover your floor, roof, wall, or any other surface. Whether you’re working on a flooring project, tiling a bathroom, or installing tiles on a roof, this tool will help you get an accurate calculation.

This calculator takes into account not just the dimensions of your room or surface, but also the size of the tiles and any gaps or overlaps that may exist between the tiles for better accuracy. For example, the tool considers the grout line or overlap that might be required between tiles, which ensures a more realistic estimate of the total number of tiles needed for your project. As shown in the figure below, the tiles will be arranged with a small gap, helping to ensure better fitting and appearance.

Simply enter the length and width of the area to be tiled and the dimensions of your tiles to get an accurate estimate. If you're unsure about the tile gap, we provide a default value, but you can adjust it based on your needs. The tool will automatically calculate the total number of tiles, helping you plan your purchases and save time.

How to Use the Tile Calculator

  1. Tile Size: Enter the length and width of a single tile. You can choose the unit of measurement (inches, feet, or centimeters) from the dropdown next to each field.

  2. Area to Cover:
    • Select Use Dimensions if you know the length and width of the area you want to tile. Then, enter these values and select the appropriate unit (feet, meters, or yards).

    • Select Use Total Area if you already know the total area to be covered. Enter this value and choose the unit of measurement (square feet, square meters, or square yards).

  3. Gap Size (optional): Enter the gap size (grout line) you plan to leave between tiles. This helps calculate a more accurate tile requirement.

  4. Box Size: Enter the number of tiles that come in one box. This helps the calculator determine the number of boxes you’ll need for your project.

  5. Price per Tile (optional): If you know the price per tile, enter it here to get an estimated total cost for your tiling project.

  6. Calculate: Click the "Calculate" button to get your results. The calculator will show:

    • The total number of tiles required
    • The number of boxes needed
    • The estimated cost if you entered a price per tile

  7. Clear: Click the "Clear" button to reset the form and start a new calculation.

What is Gap Size?

The gap size refers to the space left between tiles when installing them on floors or walls. This gap plays a crucial role in the overall tile installation process, affecting both the aesthetic and functional aspects.

Purpose of Gap Size:

  • Allowing Expansion: Tiles may expand or contract due to temperature and humidity changes. The gap provides space for this movement, preventing tiles from buckling or cracking.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The gap between tiles creates a uniform and symmetrical look, enhancing the visual appeal of the tiled area.
  • Grout Application: The gap is typically filled with grout (cement or adhesive) which holds the tiles in place and ensures a smooth surface.

Typical Gap Sizes:

  • Standard Size: A gap of 1/16 inch (1.5mm) to 1/8 inch (3mm) is commonly used for regular tile installations.
  • Larger Tiles: For larger format tiles, the gap size may increase to 1/8 inch (3mm) to 1/4 inch (6mm).
  • Natural Stone Tiles: For natural stone tiles, the gap size is generally larger, around 3/16 inch (4.5mm) or more, to accommodate the natural variations in stone.

The appropriate gap size depends on the tile material, the type of room, and the installation method. By entering the gap size in the tile calculator, you can accurately estimate the amount of material (tiles and grout) needed for your project.
